IABANY's Annual Bloomsday Celebration
June 16, 2010 at 6:00pm
AIHS, 991 Fifth Avenue
|
 |
"Hold to the now, the here, through which all future plunges to the past."
James Joyce, Ulysses
The Irish American Bar Association of New York, in association with the American Irish Historical Society and the Consulate General of Ireland, is delighted to invite you to its annual Bloomsday Celebration, featuring the John Quinn Memorial Address, delivered by Judge John Gleeson, U.S. District Court Judge for the Eastern District of New York. The address honors the role James Joyce played in the development of First Amendment jurisprudence in the United States, through a revolutionary decision by Judge John Woolsey in 1933 permitting the publication of Joyce’s masterwork. Judge Gleeson will be introduced by the Hon. Reena Raggi, U.S. Circuit Court Judge, and the program will conclude with several readings from the work that Judge Woolsey described in his seminal decision as a "true picture" by a "real artist in words.” Niall Burgess, the Consul General of Ireland will be one of our Ulysses readers. This event is free and begins with a reception with traditional Irish music. Priority registration will be given to IABANY and AIHS members. And please note, space is very limited!

The Rule of Law in the Age of Terror
May 27 2010 at 6:00pm
Fordham Law School
|
 |
Reconciling the protection of fundamental democratic liberties with the necessity of combating terrorism is a relatively new challenge to the United States. Not so to many democratic countries that have had long struggles against terrorism. Countries like Ireland, Britain and Israel have faced the powerful temptation – and in some cases, imperative - to compromise the rule of law and civil liberties when confronting terrorism.
As U.S. courts and criminal justice agencies grapple with the threat of domestic terrorism, this is an especially appropriate time for a dialogue on the delicate and symbiotic balance between fighting terrorism and protecting constitutional liberties. The Irish, with their experience in addressing terrorism within the framework of a constitutional democracy, have much to add to this debate.
This program, presented by the Irish American Bar Association of New York, in association with Fordham Law School, will focus on what the United States can learn from other countries’ legal responses to terrorism, with a particular emphasis on the Irish experience. Join us for a fascinating discussion with academic experts who have studied this issue in depth, Benton Campbell, former Interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, who addresses these issues on a daily basis in actual investigations and prosecutions, and the Hon. Brian M. Cogan, who will moderate the discussion. The pael includes:
Prof. Deborah Pearlstein (Princton University);
Prof. Martin Flaherty (Fordham Law School);
Prof. Arie Perliger (Stony Brook University/West Point);
Aisling Reidy (Human Rights Watch; former director f the ICCL);
Benton Campbell (former U.S. Attorney for the E.D.N.Y.);
Moderator: Hon. Brian M. Cogan (U.S. District Judge, E.D.N.Y.)
This event is free, and attendees earn two professional practice CLE credits.

Wine Geese Wine Tasting
Nov 19th 2009 at 6:30pm
Irish Consulate 345 Park Ave
|
 |
You may have heard of the Wild Geese – the Irish Jacobites who fled Ireland in the 1600s – but less well-known are the “Wine Geese,” the Irish emigrants who became vintners in places as far-flung as France, the United States, South Africa and Australia, producing some of the world’s greatest wines, including Chateau Lynch-Bages and Chateau Phelan Segur, as well as the famous Hennessey Cognac. And even more intriguing is the role founding father, president, wine connoisseur and lawyer Thomas Jefferson played in promoting many of these wines – shipping them directly from vineyards in Bordeaux to the White House on the advice of Irish wine broker, Abraham Lawton.
Taste and learn about a fascinating piece of Irish history – called “the hidden jewel in the glittering Crown of the Irish Diaspora” – at our first annual Wine Geese Wine Tasting Event, with guest speaker, Francis Browne, former president of The Wild Geese. It will be held at the Irish Consulate (345 Park Avenue) on Thursday, November 19, 2009, at 6:30 p.m.
For members we are suggesting a donation of $35 to defray the costs of the wines. We will open the guest-list to non-members (at a suggested donation of $50)

Bloomsday Celebration
June 16th 2009, 6:30pm
American Irish Historical Society 991 Fifth Avenue, NYC
|
 |
James Joyce's masterwork was not only startlingly original, it also resulted in a revolutionary legal development in the right to artistic expression in a decision by S.D.N.Y. Judge John Woolsey in 1933. In honor of Joyce's artistic and jurisprudential contributions, and in association with the American Irish Historical Society and the Consulate General of Ireland, we are presenting an address by prominent lawyer Susan Buckley, who has represented parties in the key First Amendment cases of our day. The address is entitled "From Ulysses to Bono: The First Amendment and Indecent Speech," and is named after famed Irish-American lawyer, John Quinn, who represented Joyce’s publishers pro bono in their criminal prosecution for obscenity in 1922.
It will be followed by several readings from the work that Judge Woolsey described in his seminal decision as a "tragic and very powerful commentary on the inner lives of men and women" by a "real artist in words," whose "locale was Celtic and his season Spring." Our Ulysses readers include Niall Burgess, the Consul General of Ireland, and Denis Staunton, U.S. correspondent for The Irish Times.

where to go and how to decide which events have the most value for
you. You'll understand effective, efficient networking with a
detailed process for meeting, chatting and follow up. You'll see how
to stop just collecting cards and how to start forming real
relationships that prosper.
Larry Sharpe, the presenter, is the Director of the Neo-Sage
Institute. The Neo-Sage Institute is an Influence Training Guild.
This means that clients use the Guild to get more Yes’s more often.
That includes Sales, Customer Service, Business Negotiations and
even in personal life. So, whether it’s navigating the next big deal
or the next hurdle in a bureaucracy or a broken business
relationship, the Guild shows clients how to deal with the “people”
obstacles on the path to success.

Annual Christmas Party December 9, 2003 7:00 pm
Glucksman Ireland House at New York University, One Washington Mews
|
 |
The annual IABANY Christmas Party was held on Tuesday December 9, 2003 in the exquisite surroundings of Glucksman Ireland House. Members and guests turned out in strong numbers despite the aftermath of the blizzard of the weekend before. We were delighted and honored to have among us a very special guest — Ireland's Consul General, The Honorable Mr. Eugene Hutchinson.
Eircom, Arthur Cox, and Matheson Ormsby Prentice provided sponsorship for the evening that included a table of fine cuisine along with extraordinary traditional Irish fiddle performed throughout the evening. Once again we thank Glucksman Ireland House for its generous hospitality. A gentle and gracious Christmas spirit seemed to waft between the age old walls of Glucksman Ireland House that December evening as members and guests renewed their old acquaintances and encountered new ones.

Admission Ceremony to the U.S. Supreme Court
June 9, 2003
Washington D.C.
|
 |
Members and guests of the Association from Michigan, California, New Jersey, Ireland, Northern Ireland and, of course, New York descended upon Washington's Jury's Hotel on the afternoon of Sunday, June 8, 2003 for our Group Admission Ceremony to the Supreme Court the following morning. Everyone later met in Biddy Mulligan's Bar in the hotel to catch up with old friends and get acquainted with new ones.
On Monday morning, June 9th, the Association President, Sean Campbell, moved the admission of our 33 candidates. In attendance as our guests of honor were the Honorable Mr. Justice Ronan Keane, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Ireland, and the Honorable Mr. Noel Fahey, Ireland's Ambassador to the United States. While other groups were also admitted during the ceremony, our Association was by far the largest group.
The ceremony was conducted in open court before 8 of the 9 members of the Court, including Chief Justice Rehnquist. The proceedings opened with various justices issuing five decisions from the bench. The United States Solicitor General, Mr. Ted Olson, was also present during the ceremony.
A continental breakfast was held for the candidates and their guests prior to the admission ceremony in the East Conference Room. Both Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and Chief Justice Ronan Keane appeared at the breakfast. After the ceremony, pictures of the candidates and their guests were taken on the steps of the Supreme Court.
At noon, the Association held a luncheon to celebrate the admission to practice of its candidates. Chief Justice Keane was the Guest of Honor of the Association. Also present at the luncheon were past Presidents of the Association, Marie-Therese McKenna and Janet Walsh, the current Treasurer. The Association members were also delighted to be joined by Mr. Jim Wrynn, President of the Brehon Law Society.
The day's events culminated with a reception at the home of Ambassador Fahey. The Ambassador provided warm and gracious Irish hospitality to all the members of the Association who attended that afternoon. The perfect end to a remarkable day!
